Strawn's well considered view of an official language makes sense

To the Editor:

Bob Strawn certainly loves the city of Manhattan. His children attended Kansas State University, and the community made such an impression on him that he decided to move to Manhattan because of fond memories of his kids' college days. His son lives here as well. He is now running for the legislative seat of District 66 against Sydney Carlin. He has made his views well known on many issues in letters or columns he has written for the Mercury and the Free Press. One such issue concerns immigration and the question that arises as to the requirement for an official language. He stands squarely in the court of making English this language. "In my mind, there is nothing that assimilates immigrants faster than the requirement to speak a common language. It unites us as a people." Well said. I like his premise, "But let us choose adjustments which do the least to alter what has long proven to be a satisfactory way of life." Most of the people I know like Manhattan and like the quality of life offered here. This statement should summarize our sentiments. We have problems to fix and questions to answer. Let's do it with ethics and morals, seeking the least intrusive path into our everyday lives. I believe Bob Strawn will do just that.
