First published in The Manhattan Mercury, October 26, 2006. Strawn knows how harmful rising property taxes are for elderlyTo the Editor: It is distressing to read articles in the paper suggesting that property taxes will continue to rise as they have over the past dozen years. In his walks around the 66th District, Bob Strawn has encountered many senior citizens who tell him that higher property taxes are a serious problem for people on fixed incomes. In a compassionate society, we should not drive senior citizens out of their homes and perhaps out of the state because of ever increasing property taxes. To date, no one has stepped forward to offer a solution, that is, until Bob proposed capping property taxes for senior citizens who are living on Social Security. What a great idea. It's unfortunate that Democrats, the supposed party of the people, feel differently and that seniors, along with everyone else, should be taxed to and beyond their deaths. It is difficult to take issue with Bob on this point. We urge you to consider what has happened to our property taxes and join us in voting for Bob Strawn on Nov. 7. Jim and Delores Thomas |
